GUI Installation issues with PiCore 14/15
(1/1)
mbuck:
I have an original Raspberry Pi B and haven't been able to get PiCore to work on it. I have tried both 14 and 15 versions and get the same results. I created an SD card with the image and it will boot fine. I followed the instructions in the README file to adjust the size of the partition, etc. With that, it works fine as a non GUI system. However, running startx revealed that the GUI wasn't installed. When I ran tce-load -i TC.tcz it didn't find it and I found I needed to download the .tcz file (I didn't see the -wi until later). I did find some instruction how how to download the .tcz files to the "Optional" directory which I did. Then I rand tce-load -i TC.tcz. Id started out fine, but ended up getting errors resulting from a missiong desktop.sh script. That was apparently supposed to be automatically deployed to the /usr/bin directory, but wasn't. I have run the above steps multiple times, and also tried version 14 in addition to 15 with the same result. After some playing and manually installing the flwm_topside extension the desktop.sh file appeared, so I saved it off and started over. This time I manually copied the desktop.sh script to /usr/bin before running tce-load -i TC.tcz. Then it installed with no errors. After launching the GUI with startx, I found that the only application that would run was the terminal app. The rest of the icons in the dock at the bottom of the screen did nothing when I clicked on them, including exit. The popup menu options also did not work. It appears that something is still missing in the installation. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I should mention that I downloaded the armv6 version of everything I used.
Paul_123:
TC.tcz is not fully functional on piCore because some want to use Xorg, and others Xorg3d.
As a minimum, load these extensions. Xorg, flwm, aterm, and wbar

I started over again with piCore 15. I copied in my desktop.sh script, and then installed the extensions you recommended. With this I had success. All the apps in the dock worked. Thank you for your help.
Can you recommend a web browser that would work? As I search the forums, all the discussions are from 2009 to 2015, and many of the browsers discussed, like midori are not available, or don't support Javascript (dillo). What are people using now? What will work on my older Raspberry Pi?
curaga:
No modern browser supports armv6.

this thread may not completely answer your browser question but does provide food for thought:
