How to create cheap four wires untwisted ethernet cable for short distance
neonix:
Here is switch that offers 10Mbps at 200m extended distance (100m is standard).
100m= 328 feet
200m= 656 feet
Does this switch use 2 x 100BASE-TX on 8 wires instead 4 wires (100m)?

BTW. In 1995 when 100BASE-TX standard was published, they could create 2 wires half-duplex transmission, upload and download on 2 wires. In this way old telephone cables could be used on short distances.

How does this passive ethernet hub works?
Does both computers have the same static ip adress or dynamic DHCP?
Can I connect 4 computers using only one 8 wire cable?

All computers must have unique addresses. That's a requirement for Ethernet.
How the computers get their addresses has nothing to do with the hub. The
computers can have static addresses, receive an address via DHCP from
another device connected to the hub, or a combination of both.

When one computer talks, the message goes out to all of the computers, not
just the one it was addressed to. The other computers see the message was
not addressed to them, so they ignore it.
If more than one computer tries to talk at the same time, you have a data
collision, and the computers will have to try again after a delay.

No. The passive hub contains diodes that are used to connect the computers.

If this device works the same way like active hub, then how many devices I can connect to one local network using passive hub?
I was thinking about creating two passive hub and connect them to router using 2 four wire cables combine in one UTP CAT5 cable.

Hello forum,
over all the years, the only thing i learned on cabling seemed to be that for connecting a single PC to one other single PC......you need a "crossover ethernet cable" not a regular ethernet cable....?
i believe that's right.....
......i can imagine network engineering is an extremely contrived and responsible position.......you hear all manner of stories .........such as large networked PC systems having issues due to network cabling passing by large old metalic heating systems and the networking passing too close to the cables feeding that heating......
thx
