Is there an alternative to cups-pdf.tcz when using the latest cups?

One can print to PS (many apps support that without cups) and convert to pdf with ps2pdf (part of gs).

so far I remember my editor leafpad and gnumeric has a "print to file" which is on fact a pdf output (I have currently no CUPS printer installed at my TCL PC).
I dont need CUPS-PDF.
I dont know how it looks for other programms (I did not use other programs because they had no GUI with print menu).
