wicd reloaded
« on: November 20, 2009, 06:14:32 AM »
I got latest wicd 1.6.2.2 up and running on TC 2.5 and current repository. It requires testing and integration with Xfce4 and LXDE, but works fine. I'm just connected to my neighbour's open WLAN :)

As I wrote, it is running on TC 2.5 with available extensions in the repository. Tested with Xfce4 and LXDE, managing Ethernet and wireless connections. No additional libs, no hacks. wicd source as it is downloaded.

wicd-curses need some extra python modules not available in the repo, but I left it for a later time when GUIS and DE integration is ready.

There is a so called network manager, but it is very far from wicd or gnome network-manager. And also LXDE specific. Will deal with it later.

BTW, here is an actual wicd screenshot:

What are you using to display battery usage in the bottom right corner?

Actually it is not a battery status bit the wicd tray icon showing wireless signal strength.

LXDE comes with buit-in panel addons by default, like battery status monitor. You can add it to the default panel or any other created.

It looks good, all kind of connections, including WPA managed correctly. Just fixed a bug in the original source, it didn't restore saved setting. I will submit a test version during the weekend.

I submitted it for publishing. Tested with stock TC 2.5, Xfce4 and LXDE. It works fine, I really like it :) If you configure properly, will connect to wired and wireless networks automatically. WPA settings are done automatically, no need to touch wpa conf files at all.

I configured wired network as a priority connection and my home WLAN for automatic connection. If lan cable is not plugged, it connects to WLAN. As soon as ethernet cable is plugged, switch over to wired, when unplugged, switch back to wireless. No any manual config, connect, disconnect commands.

I forget whether you already need a connection for wicd to work?

Here's the cheap, 4k approach (of course you'd have to type in a command to actually connect  :)

Connection wizards will find available devices and networks while offline (eg, Puppy connection wizard).

edit: I just found a past post, where it was able to  list connections after using
using wlan0 and wext for supplicant driver. I guess it wasn't until I built wireless-mod that I
was able to actually connect.   The Puppy connection wizard has other features, like finding the
correct device, etc., so it's more automatic.
