forum error (500 Internal Server Error) when preview or post

FWIW: We have a fresh SMF 2.1.4 installed with no extensions or other bells/whistles...
NOTE: For obvious reasons, we do not use the TCL template for SMF, so that area went untested.
TCL template is circa 2010'ish if memory serves, so it may be worthwhile testing the same post on a different template.

ERR500 did not pop when creating a new post with the above content under 2.1.4.

Anyone else have a SMF 2.1.x install to test on?
(With and without CODE block tested just in case.)

Yes I have it running, it works fine.  At some point, I need to move the forum to it, but just lack the time.

The look and feel is as close as I can make it, but it will change.

Oh dear, I hope it's not too awkward to use in lightweight Web browsers like Dillo. Other Web forums have all deterred me already for that reason.
