WHy is this terminology so incorrect?

Solid State Drive. or disk.......... SSD

THere is no "drive" present. 

A Hard Disk "Drive"   HDD....... is referring to the drive shaft of motors that
spin the physical disk surface.

SSD  does not have any motors or drive's or drive shafts or disks.


The term should be renamed....Solid State Device.

Not really, as there are many solid state devices, how would you know which one was being referred to.....

Maybe it should be SSDS, solid state data storage.

The "save" icon for pretty much every program is and will probably forever be a floppy disk. A program's dashboard doesn't protect us from mud kicked up by horses, but we've kept the name. The key is using the terms everyone else is familiar with, even if they are out of date. Otherwise, you will be failing to communicate.

Exactly, well said.   Nothing wrong with SSD in my opinion, give the consumer something to relate too.   SSD is a Solid State Drive as opposed to a Spinning Hard disk Drive.

There is a drive present. The term drive refers to a storage device and the prefix describes the medium used:
Tape Drive - uses a flexible strip that resembles a spool of tape as a storage medium.
Floppy Drive - uses a flexible disk shaped storage medium.
Hard Drive- uses a rigid disk shaped storage medium.
Solid State Drive - uses non volatile memory chips as a storage medium.
Ram Drive - uses volatile memory chips as a storage medium.

well thanks for the views and comments.

I suppose they must have naming conventions and common sense.

 Yes i guesse that a Floppy drive symbol will always be used for SAVE.

i sometimes think extra symbols could help.

Maybe for SSD.....they could add a symbol denoting that nothing ever MOVES inside this object.

uh......i don't know what Symbol indicates that nothing moves inside an object.

For fragile they use the symbol showing a....... "half colored wine glass"....


maybe  they can use....a symbol of ...... "circular gears with cogs of different sizes....intertwined"  which indicates motion.......

but then a large....... X cross .......drawn through the cogs.....

That symbol would show the device does NOT contain any moving parts.

I think a lot of computers actually DO MOVE......when they are thrown into mid flight from office desks
and angry staff.
