how to update from 6.4 to newest
« on: May 07, 2019, 06:38:00 PM »
Hello,
i've got HP terminal T5730(sempron 2100+) running TC 6.4 installed on flash.

I want to ask what is the easiest and most secure way to update to newest TC version without loosing anything?
Can someone please explain it step by step like for the newbie?

thank you

Updating involves replacing core.gz and vmlinuz with the latest versions and updating your extensions.

If you are moving from tc-6.x to tc-10.x, it might be a good idea to start with a new tce extension folder since most of the extensions have changed in the interim. You can do this using the "tce" boot code.

@Juanito thank you for your response.
The part associated with tce extension foler is scary to me.

Will I lose installed extensions and configurations by doing this way?

Maybe the less risky way for me would be to install new versions one by one(6.4.1, 7.0, 7.1, etc.) and each time updating the extensions? There would not be such a jump of the version?

If you make a new extensions folder - for example tce_tc10 - all of your existing extensions and backup will remain in your old extensions folder. Remember to use the "tce" boot code to point to the new tce folder.

Note that if you use wifi to connect to the internet, you should download the required extensions to the new extensions folder in advance.

Plus you can always backup the entire drive before making changes. Insert an usb stick, tar it up, etc.
The only barriers that can stop you are the ones you create yourself.
