please add a meaningful description for any extension
« on: July 08, 2009, 10:08:45 AM »
As a medium experienced linux user I do not know all the available software just from the package name, so it is a bit annoying if you have to install dozens of extensions just to find out that they are not what you're looking for.

Maybe someone with write access to the wiki could add an additional sentence to the "Create Extensions" instructions below the existing one:

Code: [Select]
Now use a plain text editor to create program_name.tce.info
something like:

Quote
Do not forget some words in the descriptions for those users who do not know your package already

It is difficult to find something from just the package name. For example, if you need an email reader, you may not know that "alpine" will do what you need.

Currently, appbrowser simply lists the extensions by name. It would help you if there was an option to list them by category, and you could browse the categories. The web browser entry would have firefox, opera, minefield, etc. listed together.

@developers:
Is it possible to have two tabs under "Extensions" where one is the list as it exists now and the other is a tree control with a categorical hierarchy? The actual categorization of the list would be a tedious task, but we could probably get that info from another distro.

Currently, the best way would be to use the search box on the bottom of appbrowser. It searches through the whole info files.

For example, "browser" should show opera, firefox etc, "e-mail" should show alpine, sylpheed..

Categories would be an improvement though, they are being considered.
The only barriers that can stop you are the ones you create yourself.

Friedl: If you want to do that, you are free to do so.  It may be better to shorten it though, to keep it succint.

However, there may be some extensions that could be hard to describe... but there is usually a link (one could look it up before installing).

It might be useful also to add a few tags to the comments of an info file, in the event that a particular word might apply to the application but not fit into a typical description.
For example, supertux could include "mario" and "penguin",  ffmpeg could include "movie" and "music".  And I'm really surprised that the word "scanner" is not in the xsane info
