How to save my applications on a win98SE partition?
« on: July 10, 2009, 04:45:18 AM »
Hi there:
I still like DSL and now I played around with TC 2.1. It is just great. But -

After I installed my favourite applications (Firefox, AB-Word, mc and so on) everything worked fine.
I did the backup, but after rebooting I could not see the Firefox icon any more. I was able to start the mc (midnight commander). I was not able to start all the other applications.

Can somebody help me?

Thank you
Winfried

BTW: Is ist possible to burn a new bootable CD (remaster) or generate an ISO file for a bootable CD/?
t(w)o be(ers) or not t(w)o be(ers) that is the question

win98SE partition

I assume you are talking about a FAT 32 partition. Tiny Core can be installed on a FAT 32 partition, and can work. You may have less problems on a Linux filesystem, such as an Ext3.

It is not really clear exactly what you did. Can you be more specific?

I'm guessing you didn't mount the fat32 partition. It should work fine with linux.  I love upgrading Win98 (ie, to linux   :)  ), since that's the default format so you can use all the windows files.

Thank you all so much for the comments and suggestions.
yes, I would like to have the following:

Tiny Core on a USB stick and/or on a bootable CD
have only the applications installed,  I really  n
eedwould like to write and read ext3 and FAT 32 on the stick or on a mounted hard drive

I found an article on the web on how to remaster. I tried it but had limited success
I am trying again right now on a PC with more memory .The more i use (play) around with TC the more I love that thing. It is just excellent.

I am planning also to make a USB stick with FAT 32, EXT3, swap partitions and install it on that stick with only a few extensions to use it on the road. If you have info or links for that how to do it please let me know.

BTW: Where can I find instructions on how to install it on a hard drive partition?

you all have a good weekend
thank you
winfred

Hi - thank you so much
I worked in Live mode and specified the third mode of operation, where I slected
{hda1| sda1} option at boot time.
I down loaded several extensions ( download only) - did not install them
I saw the extensions in the "optional" folder.
I tried to remaster and everything worked fine exept, in the final stage, when the
system tries to write the remastered iso I got a an error message. Not enough
memory. It wrote only about 10% or so ---
 I have 256 MB RAM

Do I need more RAM?

Or is there a way to use a partition or a file?

Thank you all
Winfred
