usb keyboard not working with official pi touchscreen

i recently switched from an hdmi/usb touchscreen to the official one that uses the ribbon and gpio.  i have gathered i need to load a kernel module to get the touchscreen working from posts on here but my logitech keyboard/trackpad does not seem to work on this screen.  i can plug the old screen in and it works but it does not work on the official touchscreen.  any ideas why or how to fix.  i also posted in the screen forums over there in case this is something normal with that interface it uses, but i thought it might just be a picore quirk you guys are familiar with so thought i'd ask here too
