LXDE desktop issue...
« on: June 05, 2016, 11:15:40 PM »
Tested LXDE desktop on dCore-jessie and wily, both same problem. After startx an error popup appears, takes a while to populate with 'No session for PID <lxsession>'. Stops the desktop from loading until the error message is clicked. It appears to be a known issue with LXDE, no definitive fix i could find. Just reporting the issue if anyone is able to troubleshoot, thanks.

I don't see this behavior in a Ubuntu Trusty install with LXDE, so I will try to find what is needed to prevent this.

That's a good sign. Runnng  startlxde  generates the 'Error' popup, the PID provided is always linked to 'lxsession'. Checking /home/tc/.cache/lxsession/LXDE/run.log reports trace error PID, failed to execute child process dbus-launch.

Tried:
* Installed  dbus-x11  at boot.
* Installing  lxpolkit  at boot.
* Re-imported LXDE with -R and -S options.
* Reports indicate configuration change, like /etc/pam.d, some files not present/different.

Nitram - I will be home to my machine later this evening, but if you or someone else wants, try installing policykit-1 and then launching lxde.  I read a Debian bug report about it, and they did not see the need to add policykit-1 as a required dep.  That may fix it.  It brings the size up of lxde.sce from 114M to 128M, but if it fixes the error message it is perhaps worth adding as a dep.  I was able to import lxde over an ssh console session, I will test tonight.

Sorry, already included in the LXDE i've been testing:
Code: [Select]
Choose existing SCE(s) that will provide dependencies for policykit-1.

         1. Xprogs
         2. bsdgames-nonfree
         3. ca-certificates
         4. cde
         5. dbus-x11
         6. dillo
         7. dwm
         8. emelfm
         9. firefox
        10. flwm
        11. fvwm
        12. gimp
        13. grep
        14. grub
        15. i3-wm

Enter selection ( 1 - 26 ) or just Enter to proceed, (n)ext, (p)revious:

policykit-1 already exists in below dependency SCEs, aborting.

lxde

Ok.  I did find one thing, with the package lxsession-logout the Logout option in the bottom of the menu now brings up the box with the logout options.  I added it to the dep list.

Though this pid error box is a very common error in LXDE and not dCore or even Debian/Ubuntu specific, I will still be looking for a fix.

Glad you got logout working. Another thing, right clicking panel to close application sometimes doesn't work, panel flickers, crashed once. The startup popup error appears to be a common complaint with no definitive fix. Lots of google, lxde site, lxde mailing list. Mailing list dismissed as a minor issue, guess user wouldn't expect a DE to load at startup without error. Error still occurs when just importing  lxde-core  . Ubuntu Wily and Trusty lxde-core both have same dependencies. Tried everything i can think of for the moment.

Strangely enough I have LXDE not showing this popup error in dCore-trusty, even with xorg-all.sce and lxde.sce being the only SCEs loaded with no extra deps.  But I am using the updates and backports repos in /opt/debextra, so it may be something they fixed there.

Tried various combinations to enable /opt/debextra/ Wily backports and updates, can't get it to work:
deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ wily-backports main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ wily-updates universe

If you have suggestions regarding backports and updates please advise.

Removed all ~/home configs related to LXDE, restarted and right click panel bug still there too.

IIRC the startup popup error was not present in older versions, maybe they're too busy preparing LXQt.

May install just Openbox, pcmanfm, lxpanel and lxterminal to see how it works. Less complexity and bloat than LXDE, OnDemand properly integrated, probably no popup and panel bug. If it works well will add wiki note for dCore versions that get these frustrating bugs.

I also used the Wily backports and updates with the main, universe, multiverse, and restricted repos for each of them but still see that error.

I will try on a Wily hard drive install also to see if it is there too, but all the bug reports online I have seen have been on Debian/Ubuntu HD installs.

Pretty positive these are all LXDE issues, not related to dCore in any way. Came up with a nice alternative package that will be placed in wiki: openbox, tint2 (awesome panel edit GUI), lxterminal, pcmanfm. All plays nice together. The lxpanel issue is a major bummer, even installed seperately with just Openbox, right click to close an application and the panel crashes every time. If you make new discoveries let me know but please don't feel obligated to spend any more time on it. Thanks for all your input and assistance.

Got lxpanel running more stable in Openbox, dCore-wily. Googling 'lxpanel right click crash' returns lots of hits. It's obviously not configured out-of-the-box for dCore which contributes to the instability. Although not stable from install like tint2, lxpanel is so nice with Openbox. Will add this to desktop applications wiki. Noting here as my last post indicated it was broken, turns out just senstitive.

Basically remove or update any panel configurations not in your dCore setup, then it recognizes everything and nothing crashes:
* On first run, right click empty panel space -> panel settings -> panel applets -> application launch bar -> preferences. Remove all 'ghost' items and replace with actual onboot system software (eg. terminal, file manager, browser).
* Click on 'advanced' tab and designate file manager, terminal emulator and logout command (eg. exittc).
* A proper config file with these changes gets created (/home/tc/.config/lxpanel/default/panels). Don't manually configure, use right-click panel settings.
