If you're using Xvesa (default) use xsetup.sh .
If you're using Xorg you might need to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf .

For Xvesa, you can only use available vesa modes. "Xvesa --listmodes" may help.
If your video chipset is Intel, checkout the i910 extension.
For Xorg, you might also need to load an xf86-video extension for your chipset.
