Many thanks,

If my installation is correct apart from the the target needing to be sda1, I'm lost...

With GParted I can delete whats there and leave it blank.

Is that OK?

Target sr1
target should be sda1  (which is the first hdd partition seen by linux)

From the core book pages 11 through 17  is all you need at this point

if gparted operation is confusing you then don't use it stick to the diagrams in the book

well it winged at me saying it was mounted.

Maybe a power down and power up again will fix it.

Run out of time today, but I'm sure we are getting a lot closer...

Many many thanks to all the members of this Forum who have help !

Major improvements !!!

I took the hard disc out of the Thinkpad laptop and put an old 250GB hard drive in a powered USB gismo and lo... the install went just fine !

I think the Thinkpad has issues unique to itself for the internal drive, but I could be wrong.  About to try and install on an SD card.

There are some APP for the thinkpad but not yet investigated what they do.

I found this 250GB hard drive would run just fine on any PC I had laying about which didn't have a hard disc in !  That opens up its uses even more !

Many thanks to all who have helped me !!!!!
