icewm incorrect startup.

icewm setup script should set the desktop to icewm-session instead of icewm.

icewm workaround
« Reply #3 on: September 16, 2015, 05:14:43 AM »
Hi tinycore team,

with tc 6.4 (and before)
small problem with icewm, different to the other tc-desktops.

First the standard procedure:
Start CorePlus CD with icewm set.
$ cat /etc/sysconfig/desktop   shows 'icewm'

Install it using "TC_Install", mode "USB-HDD" to sdb

Restart from this USB-stick and install  fluff.tcz  using wBar Apps Icon.
After installation wBar is away and desktop menu only offers aterm.  :-(

Additional work to get a fine icewm:
open aterm and type in, don't forget sudo:

$ sudo editor /etc/sysconfig/desktop

shows 'icewm-session'. Edit to 'icewm' and save file.

Now within 'TC Exit Options' window mark

(*) Exit to Prompt

and click on [OK]

At the prompt type in: $ startx [Enter]

Now icewm wakes up again with wBar and correct desktop menu.

Btw:
$ cat /etc/sysconfig/desktop   now shows 'icewm-session' again.
However the icewm desktop behaves as desired and allows additional modifications
and survives reboot, so all is fine.

TinyCore, SliTaz, LinuxMint, Tails, Mac ...

As per the info file I adjusted the start-up script a few months back - I don't recall, but presumably to echo "icewm-session" to /etc/sysconfig/desktop.

Since I don't use icewm, I made the change because a user asked me to (see above)

Edit: I just tried icewm and it seems to work fine, wbar does not disappear and all the usual icons are there. I agree that starting with desktop=icewm-session is not exactly intuitive though...

I suggest visiting the icewm website.
The proper way to start icewm is with icewm-session.
It runs the icewm startup scripts and then launches icewm.
The icewm startup scripts allow you to launch a desktop such as idesk and other programs ( similar to .X.d ).
