How to share folder at VirtualBox
« on: August 29, 2014, 11:31:06 AM »
Hi,

I installed TinyCore 5.3 on VirtualBox and I want to copy files from Windows 8 to TinyCore and vice versa. How can I do it ? I read previous topics about this theme.

1. I must install virtualbox-ose-additions.tcz ? But I didn't find it in extensions.
2. Someone advice use WinSCP, but how ?

Thank you for all advices to share folder between TinyCore and Windows.

IIRC, I once used a USB flash drive to share files without a network.
Download a copy and keep it handy: Core book ;)

Two methods I use daily for file transfer between guest and host in VirtualBox are USB thumb drives and online services like Dropbox.

To use USB in VirtualBox you'll have to open the settings of the VM, open USB and add a filter for the USB device, then after booting the VM (with the filter) USB device will be available.

I tried to use your procedure with USB, but it doesn't recognize USB and show something like "USB is using ...", but I don't use USB.

I start http server locally and connect on it from TinyCore on http://10.0.2.2:1337 . And now I code web download and upload :))

Thanks for all

Hi ferko,

An other possibility is to install a FTP server on your VM and use a FTP client on Windows.

That's what i have chosen.

Sure you can use any server or online storage like dropbox etc etto share files but I find the USB method the simplest, just know that the USB can only be mounted by one OS at a time. So transferring data files from the guest to the host requires a shutdown of the VM to release the USB. At least that's the method I choose, then the USB can be mounted by the Host and files retrieved.
