Tiny Core, Compact Flash and installed application.
« on: July 19, 2015, 11:41:36 AM »
Hello, all.
Sorry for my poor english, please.
I have an old compact file server, i decided to install TCL there. It has no connector for monitor and keyboard, only compact flash for boot. I copy TCL image to CF card, it boot, i see address associations on my dhcp server.
Now i need some additional packages like ssh sever and other.
I prepare card with virtual machine, because i havent physical access to the server.
All what i do is strongly by instructions. I install applications with "App Browser", new files in tce appears. There are some problems:
1. If i create directory /tce in the root of boot media, or other place on boot media, TCE boot in console mode, independently from boot parameters.
2. With App browser all installing in /tmp/tce/optional, of course, on next reboot all lost
3. I made some changes. I copy all files from /tmp/tce/optional to /mnt/sda1/cde/optional exlude *.md5.txt. I change 3 files in /mnt/sda1/cde by command ls /tmp/tce/optional >> FILENAME. Files are: copy2fs.lst, onboot.lst, xbase.lst.
All works. Midnight Commander, for example.
Why all instructions, thats i red ( may be "was read"? sorry) was wrong? Why App manager doesn't work correctly in my case? May be that because i have scissorhands?

If I remember correctly, the existence of a  cde  directory automatically makes Core boot into Cloud-Mode (downloaded extensions go into  /tmp/tce/optional  and thus lost after reboot) because  cde  is only used for booting from CD-ROM.
Try renaming your  cde  directory to  tce .
Also make sure you do not have the boot code  cde  in your boot loader's config file.
Download a copy and keep it handy: Core book ;)

I will, thanks.

Yes, it is. "APPEND cde" with other options like "waitusb=N" or "loglevel=N". I dont touch this because i decide it is necessary to boot different modules, thats described in files copy2fs.lst, onboot.lst, xbase.lst.

Don't work. I'd try install nano. After reboot it disappear.
Also, Midnight Commander Icon in quick launch panel appears by itself. I installed MC manually, as i wrote.

Problem was solved ONLY when i renamed CDE to TCE and excluded boot option CDE.
If i used one of this variants without another, thats wasn't work.
Is here somebody who show me some manual where that obvious things is written?

You must remove the  cde  boot code in order to keep downloaded extension. Otherwise Core thinks it runs from CD-ROM and would be unable to copy any data to the boot media, so it writes to RAM.

I think, FAQ must be remaking a little, for some very clever people, like me. There are some not obvious things, thats is important in some situations. And that will reduce unuseful posts in forum, if it's impotant.

It's not easy to write manuals that are easy to understand.
It might be true that some articles in the wiki could need a rewrite, but the info you were looking for is actually there and still accurate.

Sorry, but in my opinion, it's your responsibility to first read the wiki, FAQ, etc.
Also, my first reply already included the solution to your problem.

Don't get me wrong, I did lots of noob mistakes myself when I started using Core Linux, but it's in Core's nature that it has some rough edges. It's not like most Linux distros; It's a Tool-Kit.

Have fun using Core.
