It turns out that the latest radeon firmware is kernel version dependent, at least for late model radeon video cards.

So I have built and re-submitted firmware-radeon extension for kernel-3.17 and newer  to tc-7.x x86 & x86_64 repo's;  expect it to arrive shortly

A second firmware-radeon extension for kernel-3.16 and older is being prepared and will submitted to tc-6.x x86 & x86_64 repo's asap (while we are still supporting tc-6)

Thanks

It is? I thought the newest firmware was backwards compatible. Got a link?

It took me by surprise because I'd already submitted the latest firmware-radeon extension, take a look at this..

https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Radeon#Firmware
As a result I've modeled our firmware-radon extension  based on this info
Actually this is not where I originally read of the issue,  anyhow this Gentoo Wiki is where I landed and appears to have the most current data regarding radeon CAPE VERDE and newer chips, from both
http://people.freedesktop.org/~agd5f/radeon_ucode/  and
https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git

Each firmware-radeon extension submitted for tc6 & tc7 repo's now contain the same firmware blobs for older chips plus the kernel specific (if i can call it that..?)  blobs for later model (CAPE VERDE+) chips
A list of effected chips and their associated firmware files are included with each extension

Also here is a reference to the previously mentioned phenomena
ref: "linuxfromscratch.org"

--- Quote ---Note that Southern Islands and Sea Islands chips use different firmware for kernel 3.17 and later compared to earlier kernels. Identify and download the required blobs then install them:
