External monitor with TCL on Asus netbook?
« on: November 05, 2014, 01:46:37 PM »
Hi, folks.

I'm trying to use a small 15" external CRT monitor on my Asus 1000HA netbook with CorePlus 5.1 installed. I can't get the monitor to work. It comes on but there's no signal to it. I know the monitor is okay because it works fine with WindowsXP booted. Can someone tell me how to get TCL to send VGA output to tthe external monitor port?

Thanks.

Check your BIOS or FN keys for monitor switching before you boot.

lxrandr.tcz
It detects the external monitor, and then you can switch to it.

Hi, Gerald.

Not sure what you mean here. If it's working in WinXP, doesn't that mean the BIOS and Fn keys are set right?

My laptop lets me use FN keys to switch the display to an external monitor.  I do that while at the grub boot prompt, then load Core.

Oh, I see. Unfortunately, I don't get a grub boot prompt when I boot Core. It just boots up without it. And there's nothing in the BIOS setup for monitors. Is there some way to force a grub boot prompt?

What about a terminal command that will look at the external monitor port?

You should be able to set a countdown / timeout for your boot loader so it waits a few seconds until it loads linux.

Sys/Extlinux
Code: [Select]
TIMEOUT 20
GRUB2
Code: [Select]
set timeout=15
Grub4DOS
Code: [Select]
timeout 5
Download a copy and keep it handy: Core book ;)

Hi, Misalf.

Thanks for the boot codes. I'll give them a try.

Hi, all.

I did a replacement test with a borrowed external flat-screen monitor. This 2nd external monitor works with Core, proving that there is VGA at the computer port when the netbook monitor function key is set to LCD + CRT or CRT only.

So, since there is VGA output, I can't imagine why the CRT external monitor wouldn't work with Core. It's some sort of compatibility issue that I don't understand.

I'll give lxrandr.tcz atry, as Onyarian suggested, but I have a feeling that there won't be a solution to this problem, and that the CRT monitor is just too old to work with Core on my computer.

Cheers.
