Hello,

I just discovered TinyCore Linux for the Rpi. I have played around with quite a few Linux distros over the years.

I downloaded TinyCore and wrote the image file to a 4gb SD card. This is the file that I downloaded (piCore-5.2.1-X.img). I am curious if it should boot to any kind of GUI? All I get is a tc@box$ command prompt. When I do a ls, there are no files listed.

Thanks for your help,
Gary

Hi Gary,

welcome on board. It is expected to boot the GUI similar to this:

ls gives empty list, as your home directory is empty. Try

Code: [Select]
ls /
to list file system root.

What happenes if you type

Code: [Select]
startx
in the terminal?

hmmm....that is what I was expecting to see  ;)

When I tried ls /, I do see files listed but when I try startx, I get startx: not found.

I did try another SD card, even though both worked with Raspbian, but no changes.

I am running Mint Linux 16 on my main machine and used the built-in USB Image Writer utility to create the SD card. Is there another way to create it?

Thanks again,
Gary

Code: [Select]
sudo dd if=piCore-5.2.1-X.img of=/dev/mmcblk0Let us know the result.

Thanks Bmarkus!

I did try re-downloading and still no-go when I tried to create the SD card on Mint Linux or Win32DiskImager running under VirtualBox.
This morning I tried Win32DiskImager running on a XP netbook with a SD slot and everything worked fine. Not sure why it didn't work on the Linux machine unless there is some issue with the All-in-one card reader.

Oh well, its working now and I am excited to give it a try on the Raspberry Pi.

Thanks again for your suggestions!
Gary
ps...also a Ham (NY9R)  :D
