CD boots to TC@BOX:~$ prompt, not Tiny Core Desktop
« on: December 10, 2014, 07:43:34 PM »
First day with TC. The screen I am seeing doesn't match what the documentation or many YouTube install videos show. Booting either the TinyCore or CorePlus .iso images from CD I get, not the option to "Press Enter to Begin" and TC desktop. Instead the CD boots to TC@BOX:~$ prompt. I'm missing something big and obvious but I don;t know what. Machine is an Atom processor, works well with Puppy, Mint etc. so it's not likely a hardware problem. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, I'm going through the book right now, thanks. Update: I booted my ASUS laptop with the CorePlus image and got the TC desktop as shown in the documentation. So for some reason with my Shuttle XS35V2 Atom based computer it goes to the command prompt only, no graphics screen.

You may need to load a video driver before running startx.

OK, some progress. In the FAQ I found the following that seems to relatye to what I am experiencing:
"Help X does not start. Why does my system boot up to a login prompt? Tiny Core defaults to vga=791 or 1024x768 but your machine may not be able to support that resolution. At the first boot prompt type:tinycore xsetup".
1) I discovered that to get the boot: prompt you hit the escape key from TinyCore menu. Is this documented anywhere?
2) I typed in "tinycore xsetup" and got "Could not find kernel image: tinycore"
Question: Am I going about this the right way?
Thanks!

Once you have booted and are at the '$' prompt, run 'xsetup'.
Then run 'startx'.

Hmmm, following your recommendations running from the tc@box:/$ prompt I'm getting "-sh: xsetup: not found" and "-sh: startx: not found".
I'm seriously in the weeds here.
Further discoveries:
1) Contrary to the FAQ but documented onscreen, I needed to type "core xxxxx" at the boot prompt, not "tinycore xxxx"
2) If I request boot: vga=769 I get a brief flash of a TinyCore graphics screen (Tinycore repeated twice across the page in grey) before the systems returns to the tc@box:~$ prompt.
Thanks again for your help Gerald.

Further discovery. Neither of the programs (xsetup and startx) are on the system as booted. Is this because I am not attached to a network? It appears from the documentation that the preferred (perhaps only) method of installing is being attached to a hardwired network. I had hoped to be able to do enough of a setup to get wireless going, since I do not have a convenient ethernet wire. Am I wasting my time here?
Thanks.

xsetup and xsetup are in the Xlibs extension, which is in the tinycore and coreplus iso and should be loaded with the appropriate boot option when you boot from the cd you burnt from the iso.

In other words, your system does not seem to detect the CD drive to load the X extensions. Please pastebin your dmesg (use an USB stick for example).
The only barriers that can stop you are the ones you create yourself.
