Toshiba netbook - need wifi drivers
« on: November 09, 2013, 09:18:55 PM »
I just inherited a lightly used Toshiba NB505-N500BL and would like to use the wireless under either Core 5.x or 4.x (or both).
This is an x86 (Atom) based system.

It has a Realtek RTL8188CE    PCIe wifi device built in, for which I can't seem to find a driver extension (or perhaps I just don't recognize it or I'm blind?).

Ditto for a "Tenda" brand (cheap) USB wifi device identified as Ralink RT5370.

Is anyone successfully using this netbook or either of these wifi devices with Core?

Thanks Rich, that looks like it might just do the trick - especially with that bit in the last reply in the thread.

I don't know why I didn't see that in my previous searching.

I probably won't be able to test it until morning, but I'll post result when I do.

To identify devices with certainty you should check their IDs with lspci, respectively lsusb.

My guess would be that RT5370 might work with the basic kernel wireless modules extension.

I'll have another crack at the RT5370 as I want to get it working for some other uses but in the mean time the RTL8188CE is up and running and I'm using it right now.

Due to some irregularities with my wireless access point, I don't get to just fire it up with dhcp and be done with it - I have to muck around with resolv.conf and the default route each time I connect - but the wifi does work.

Now I can go to bed.  g'night.   :)

I've updated the table on the wiki with the RTL8188CE info.
