Thanks everyone. I fell back on some ancient PRISMII-PCMCIA-Card (802.11b only) and secured the link with mandatory OpenVPN ad-hoc networking

It may be possible to use WPA with such cards with the hostap driver and wpa_supplicant.
Might require flashing firmware.
