failed to connect to virtualbox kernel service

I'm trying to the the VirtualBox Additions to work.  I installed the virtualbox-ose-additions-modules-3.0.31-tinycore app, but it is a no go.  For a while, I had no console, but then I removed my vga=7.. from the bootline and then I got the message "Failed to connect to virtualbox kernel service".

I'm using VirtualBox 4.1.16 r78094 on Windows 7 host.

Has anyone else gotten this message?  Any idea where to go from here?

BTW, this also occurred when I tried to get the VBoxAdditions to build itself.
