Thanks for the info.  I don't usually use gparted within TC, but stumbled upon the omitted icon and decided to report it.

I am intrigued by the decision to not display an icon, especially as gparted.desktop creates a working entry in the TC menu.  Using this starts gparted with the sudo command and thereby enables gparted to be used by everyone.

This is curiosity about the benefits of the choice rather than a need for an icon as my TC projects normally use JWM with Wbar disabled.

If I recall correctly (and I have a terrible memory), gparted was originally posted without icon or menu item - after some complaints, I decided to add just the menu item as a compromise.

The concern is that a user trashes his/her hard drive by mistake..

gparted appears in the System menu category in DE like Yfce4 or LXDE, not only TC menu itself. gparted itself is safe enough. Changes not executed but qued. Clicking 'Apply' a popup window displayed and a confirmation is required. If you do anything wrong, you have the opportunity to avoid problems.

Therefore I see missing on WBAR as exception (or bug) and not a protection.

I also have a poor memory and do not recall the complaints.

By its nature TC is unlikely to appeal to a user with a zero level of understanding.  The underlying philosophy of TC as a toolkit to "build it your way" requires at least some knowledge and skill.

The degree of protection afforded by omitting the icon while also including a menu item is marginal.

In view of the above, and also the comments by bmarkus, I tend towards the inclusion of the icon.  Of course, your decision as package maintainer will be respected.

I've always viewed the  wbar  as a place for items you might want routine access to. While I think
gparted  is a wonderful program, I think of it as more of a maintenance tool that the average user
would not run on a regular basis, and should not clutter up the  wbar.

I tend to think like Juanito on this one, as I have a distaste for an icon or even a menu item to launch a partitioning or formatting tool along with root privileges.

I'm not a Wbar user, but is it not possible to prevent the icon displaying via wbar.conf?  I am not at all sure about the chronology, was this available at the time the decision was made to omit the icon?

xwbar is much newer than the first gparted icon chat.
The only barriers that can stop you are the ones you create yourself.
