TinyCore Freezes upon entering boot codes

Hello.  I am new to this and may be doing something incorrectly.  I am using a Compaq Presario 2105us.  Upon startup, if I type in any boot codes, or touch any key (including f2 or f3 for boot options, and even if I just hit enter)  the computer will lock up and do nothing.  I have access to a Compaq Presarion2210us and it works perfectly (not my computer though)  Has anyone ever heard of such a thing?  Is there a fix for this?

Is the lockup before pressing enter? If so, it's a bug in isolinux, or your bios.
If it's after pressing enter, the boot is hanging someplace else, try the "debug" boot code.

Hello.  Thank you for the reply.  The problem is after I press "enter".  If I do not hit enter and just leave it alone, after a few seconds it will boot.  Though I just updated my BIOS and haven't tried it since then, so maybe it will work. I will try.

If I touch any key at all when prompted for a boot code, the computer will lock.   This happens using the latest version of Tinycore (2.8.1) as well as the last 2 versions. (I have been trying this for awhile.)

OK. What are the last few lines you see, with the bootcodes "tinycore debug"?

As soon as I press any key (including the letter: "T" to type: "tinycore debug") tinycore seems to hang.  So I am unable to type: "tinycore debug"

to read the last few lines. 

What would you recommend?

If I let it boot on its own, is there a way to do the "debug" once it is up and running?

Let's clarify a bit, so TC boots fine if left alone, but you can't enter bootcodes?

This page suggests disabling legacy usb support in the BIOS.

While slightly different from your situation, I had a computer which, when it got to the grub screen, if I pressed any key the computer would lock up.

This would happen with any operating system, so it was a computer problem, not an operating system problem.

As a result, I could only use one operating system on it.

I can't be sure of the cause, but the motherboard had connections for both IDE and SATA. I used SATA hard drives. IDE drives were the primary drives, SATA were additional.

I assumed that if I used an IDE drive it would work correctly, but never tried it. I just used one operating system.

The motherboard has since died, and I trashed the computer, so it is history.


Anyway, one thing you can know, if it happens with all operating systems it is a computer problem. If it only happens with Tiny Core, you can post that info (after you have checked the previous post).

hi, i have similar problem.
when I boot with mc it works fine - console opens.
when I bot with tc or plus it freezes up little after "Loading Extensions..."
Then there is black screen with white underline character blinking.
It works fine in VirtualBox.

Try booting TC with the text option.
Then run xsetup.
Then run startx.
