No p54pci module preloaded
« on: August 16, 2011, 02:14:28 PM »
Hello everyone,

I'm pretty new to Tine Core Linux, but it seems a really interesting project for my old notebook. I have had Puppy Linux on it before, worked very well, but the idea to start nearly from scratch I do like better.

But now I cannot get my network card working. It is a Sitecom WL-140 V2 pci card and the p54pci driver always seems to do the job for me before in Puppy. But how do I get this module running on TC? Modprobe says it can't find it. And on some way I can't download it from internet? I only found some kind of firmware files named 'isl3886pci'. So created my own tcz from it, but the only thing it does is it places the file in '/usr/local/lib/firmware' or something like that.
So now I'm really confused how to get it working. How can I get the module and what does the firmware file exactly?

I hope someone can help me out.

Greetz,
Pascal

p.s. I'm sorry for my English, I'm a Dutch student and still learning, you know.

Wireless support can be found in the wireless-xxx extension.
The only barriers that can stop you are the ones you create yourself.

Then it is supposed to work? Can't I make it without pre made extensions? I'ld like to know exactly what I'm installing, so I can keep the system as clean as possible and I know exactly what's happening. So can't I compile those tools my self? Or something like that?

Hi pascallj
First try to installing   wireless-2.6.33.3-tinycore.tcz   and see if that solves your problem, I think you
may have to reboot after installing it. Once you have it working you can always pull out the driver
you need and repackage it if you wish. By the way, your English is fine.

I loaded the wireless extension using 'tce-load -i' and then 'iwconfig' and it detected my card as eth0. After I read something about requested firmware in 'dmesg', I decided to load the 'isl3886pci.tcz' as well and plugged my network card back in. Now 'iwconfig' says wlan0 and something about IEEE 802.11bg, Mode:Managed and a lot of stuff I can remember to be good.

I'm in a hurry now (wanna go to bed) so, didn't find a way to scan for networks and connect and see if that works but I guess we're on the way!

And if it will, can you then explain why all those drivers are included in one package, and I wasn't able to find how to make a package myself? Yes I know, there is a script in the package with driver-select, which comes close to what I want, but I'm just interested how this all is compiled and so.

EDIT: Oh I forgot to mention, that before I plugged my network card back in, I unloaded the 'prism54' driver so it's going to load again when I plugged the card back in. Maybe clear for you guys, but not for everyone I guess.
