network LAN connection .....auto at tinycore boot...?.
« on: January 24, 2011, 06:55:55 AM »
Hello Forum,

Please can you help me to get a city office computer
connected to the network in the office.

The computer is booting into Tinycore.

Applications installing won't work because there is no
network connetion.

I looked at the simple interface for "network" and figure
this must be easy to complete with the required information.

The office computer shows an IP address when at windows OS
desktop level.

THe DCHP numbers can be gathered at boot up of the machine.

What else like SUBMASKS do i need to complete on the "network"
dialogue to get this office computer to find a network connection?

i want to reach the point of being able to use this office computer
and install tinycore extensions and applications for general usage.

many thanks,

Vince.

So you are sure the office computer running Windows is not using DHCP? If I would be in your situation I'd just take a look at the oufput of ipconfig /all on the Windows system and apply the same (or similar) values in TC.

Hello

Uh, i am not sure but when the computer boots up the bios screens
have an option to look at network settings....DCHP shows up in that option
but says that it does not find anything....

However, at the "windows desktop" you can't run commands like
ipconfig / all.......... because commands can't be executed......the windows OS is  all locked down

i will take another look at it all.....

thanks for your attention....

thanks

Vince.

Hi: I do not understand the situation?

Is your office computer in your LAN or is your office in another location?

If your machine is part of the same LAN you first check out whether your office
hub or switch or router has automaic address distribution or whether it has a fixed
IP address.

Then you just use the network configuration button in TC and set up your connection.

check with ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx    (IP address)

If you want to browse the net you might need the DNS servers IPs

good luck and have a good one
t(w)o be(ers) or not t(w)o be(ers) that is the question

It might be worth contacting whoever conducted the lock down.  As this is an office PC is there an IT support department or system administrator?

In corporate/institutional networks locking down the machine is commonly done to ensure the machine is used only for approved tasks and to maintain availability.  Effectively removing the lock down may contravene an Acceptable Use Policy.  Whoever applied it might be able to advise.

Have you even checked if you can bring an interface up, i.e. that module(s) and if possibly firmware for NIC are loaded?

Hello,

Thankyou for the replies.

Yes, you maybe right about the Policy surrounding office computer usage. The machines
have been locked down for the reason you mention.

My intentions are good with regard to this subject but others within the coprorate
environment may not see it that way.

I am simply interested to learn about how you can quikly gain full potention
from all computers that you come into contact with. That means to say,

1) be able to install and use any software you have.
2) have an internet connection for web browsing.
3) be able to connect external hardware to the machine for usage.
4) have a machine in the above 3 states for any person to then
effectively use.

This is just my common sense view on a public computer. It would radically
alter priority and legality depending upon the situation of each computer
in question.

I try to learn this in a safe manner. Also try to see this whole subject
from the eyes of computing IT staff that manage the systems and
the corporations that own the equipment (lease).

It is best to keep the above ideas well away from the real situations
and learn from tentative experience. (i feel)

thankyou

Vincent.

Sam.

Yes, you are 100 percent accurate as to the reasoning for these office machine lockdowns.
It appears to be exactly to "maintain availability" and for only "approved tasks" usage.

The usage lockdown "approved tasks" appears to help the over-all situation and aim
of good terminal availablity.

Thanks for the advice.

ps. perhpas because of the world wide web, the computers and corporate environment is
more generally desirable to be used. People simply don't mind sitting at quality systems with
reasonable world wide web access. Also critically....it's Free...!

My interests have somewhat branched. Origially my goal was to simply make office computers
become fully functional computing machines for the user(s).  This idea would be fine within an
environment where the actual purpose and subject endevours concerneed the actual in depth
usage of computers for production ()wide open).

For example, 1) The amount of free resources and productivity in that environment as a result
of staff co-workers being able to have the word wide web resource and capabilities of proper
usage of the computer terminals.  (installing productivity tools etc)

It looks to me like the above subject is a very large subject of adminstration of the words
corporate Information Technology resources. (i am barely advised about even the basics)

Presumably, over the years people and computer users have learned the way the average
information techonology resources are rolled out. (what effectiveness the computing faciilities
of corporations offer to the staff/users)

Back to the very original point, i also have no idea how involved it is to negotitate your way
around those rules and regulations.

I expect the best policy is to just use common sense. My vision and idea above is, very common
sense but aonly applicable in ery specific environments and condiotions.

thankyou again,

Vince.

Having now established that the lock-down is deliberately applied it seems a reasonable indication that it is done with the approval of corporate management.  Attempting to circumvent it might place you in a vulnerable position and expose you to possible disciplinary action.
