But then I just grabbed focus from what you were doing!
Perhaps if I color the background of the status area, say gold, to indicate I done?

Yes, anything visual, like a bold blinking, etc.
Please God no blinking!

Not sure about others' opinions on it, but if focus is stolen just once, to tell me the install is complete, that would be perfectly acceptable and usable.

I'd like to suggest to provide this pop-up notification only for "long-running installs". I.e. only if the time it takes from the click on the 'Install' button until the installation is complete exceeds a certain threshold (e.g. 10 seconds, maybe even user-configurable) the pop-up appears.

Plus (I almost forgot), whilst I like the fact that the (external) flwget windows are gone, I wonder if it would be possible to include a download progress bar into appbrowser (at a later point in time).

[EDIT: added the last paragraph]

For the final popup, may I suggest flnotify? ;)

A notification that doesn't grab the mouse and doesn't require a click.
edit: Well, does seem to grab mouse in flwm. Oh well.

The only barriers that can stop you are the ones you create yourself.

Opening AppBrowser creates a file ab2tce.fifo in ~.  If ~ is to be its permanent location, maybe it should be added to .xfiletool.lst.

It should be removed when appbrowser is closed.

Ah, yes it is.  Sorry for the premature report.  The enhancements in 2.10 are very nice, and I too would like to see some sort of notification that operations are complete after an install with AppBrowser.  Thanks for the hard work :D
