Can't connect to network (LAN)

(1/1)

pschalkx:
Hi there,

I can't connect to the wired network: Here's what I 've done:

I tried to install TC linux to my HD but it wouldn't work because the live CD could not connect to the Internet via LAN. So I used the alternate method posted in the wiki and could install TC on a double boot with Xubuntu. TC Linux indeed b oots lightning fast from the HD.

When I try to :
- connect to the App Browser it complains that there is no network.
- configure DHCP via the tool in the control panel, nothing seems to happen
- type sudo ifconfig eth0 up, it doesn't work either

When I start Xubuntu it connects to the network without problems, so I know the laptop and network are OK.

How do I start the network? Am I missing something?

The laptop in case is a Toshiba Satellite 2600.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Philip

Likely the firmware missing. Download it from Xubuntu: ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/metalab/distributions/tinycorelinux/2.x/tcz/firmware-2.6.29.1-tinycore.tcz

You can load it via the appbrowser -> load local. After that the dhcp button should work.

Hmmm, I see, I need to load some firmware first.

Thinking of this, the reason why I installed TC Linux was boot up speed, it had very good reviews in this area. All I will use this laptop for is to play music in the living room, therefore the need to boot up quickly.

If I install network: will it add much to boot time? I suppose it needs to negotiate DHCP and will also have some other time outs inside.

Thanks,

Philip

curaga:
No, dhcp does not delay the boot time, it's backgrounded :)
