Running KindleForPC on WINE

For those who like to read ebooks on their computer, you may want to know how to use the KindleForPC reader. The first step is to download and mount wine-gl.tcz. Then you need to snatch a copy of the KindleForPC Beta. (Note: the recent general release does NOT work in Wine). Here is a source for the download:

http://www.tucows.com/download.html?software_id=613764&file_id=220123&mirror_id=1428&t=2

You may need to move this download into your Home directory before it will run in Wine. It will be named KindleForPC-installer.exe. Open a terminal window, type in "winecfg" (without the quotes), hit Enter, and add this application by navigating through the menus to its location and selecting it. Change the Windows version to Windows 98 and Apply the changes.

If all goes well, KindleForPC will install and the Kindle reader program will open up and show you a login screen for your Amazon account. (You need one to run KindleForPC.) However, the program is trying to run with global emulation settings and it needs to be set to Windows 98. Close it and run winecfg again. This time add KindleForPC.exe which you will find in /.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Amazon/.

Now you can use a file manager to navigate to the location of the program and open it with Wine. It should run properly and allow you to access your Amazon Kindle account.

This ebook reader is not nearly as good as Fbreader, but Kindle books are usually a little cheaper to buy than other ebooks, and the Kindle book website is convenient.
