can't print pdf's (CUPS)

Printing from OpenOffice OK, but pdfs have an error in CUPS /usr/local/lib/cups/filter/pdftops failed
does anyone know what the pdftops error is?

Juanito:
If you set the log level to "debug" in cupsd.conf, re-start cups and then try to print a pdf, does the error_log give any clues?
