Requests for extensions
« on: December 31, 2008, 03:19:30 PM »
Maybe extension requests should be all kept in the one place, to save littering, and easy locating.

Following on from off-topic posts here, http://forum.tinycorelinux.net/index.php?topic=326.msg2101#msg2101 ,
XWC is very like XFE (it's what XFE was based on, but is now discontinued, I believe), and it doesn't require Fox Toolkit.
For anyone only wanting a minimal (1.1MB file) filemanager like this, this is fine.
The latest XFE is a lot more sophisticated.

"Xfe aims to be the file manager of choice for all light thinking Unix addicts!"
http://roland65.free.fr/xfe/

I'll herewith submit a formal request for XFE.tce.

Request for mc (non-GUI)

Request for mc (non-GUI)

While we are thinking of file managers, what about the "essential" one?

i wondered where that was too. it's great to see things i would have requested already made into extensions, i would have wanted html2text but it's already there.

inkspace (a more recent version with floodfill if it's not too large, otherwise you have to draw polyshapes or settle for line drawings) would be nice...

as would kompozer or if necessary, it's predecessor nvu. nvu is a lot closer to kompozer than very early inkspace next to more recent.

it would be awesome if there was an "mtpaint" of svg graphics (speaking figuratively,) but i haven't seen anything lighter than inkspace that lets you do much.

I have mc working in TC, but it's not ideal.  It seems to be fine for most features, but subshells don't work.

Request for small image viewer
« Reply #5 on: January 06, 2009, 12:37:38 AM »
Reuest for a small, light, fast image viewer like civ or gview or fotox, with slideshow capability.
Something smaller than gqview.
Thanks.

If you don't mind using the framebuffer, fbv in fb-tools can do slideshows. It's 17kb IIRC.
The only barriers that can stop you are the ones you create yourself.

Now that really is going to extremes,  :D
Some more criteria, I suppose..
Ability to display filename (somehow),
Ability to save/copyto.
Not necessarily the ability to select file to open.

Have been playing with various things like kwickshow etc, but need slideshow capability.
So far the best smallish thing seems to be Fotox for this purpose.

Also, Fotox almost provides an alternative for ImageMagick, for the purpose of viewing HUGE (~15MB) images, but it doesn't pan.
Mtpaint handles huge images better on RAM-challenged machines, and it pans. So does Gqview.

So, the plot here thickens.
There is no one-size-fits-all image viewer, and several are required for different purposes.
Gqview is probably the closest to an all-purpose viewer.

Having said that, I would like to request Fotox...  and Mtpaint and ImageMagick packages when you have nothing better to do. LOL.

doh!
I don't know how I missed that one. Thanks.

I just came in to say that I have found the "small, light, fast image viewer". gpicview.

I may not be pretty, but I am persistent.

Problem with mtpaint
« Reply #11 on: January 07, 2009, 05:32:59 PM »
Has anyone else had an issue with mtpaint displaying a tool box over the main window at the TLH corner?
I can't move it, close it... anything, or access the menu toolbar.

You could try positioning the cursor over the window somewhere, holding down the <alt> key and trying to drag it away.

This works when a window title bar has gone off the top of the screen.

Requests for extension - apt
« Reply #13 on: January 07, 2009, 08:43:46 PM »
Hi all, I'm a first-timer here and LOVE Tiny Core!

I have a suggestion for an extension that I believe would *really rock* - apt!
Just imagine that - grab apt using a T.C. extension and you can instantly access the humungous Ubuntu repositories!  Awesome!  No need to download a huge ~690 Mb Ubuntu image - just grab Tinycore, grab the extension - done!

 Thoughts..... ?

i don't know if roberts plans to do that. just today i was reading about using apt-get to make dsl extensions from packages in the debian woody repository. even then the idea was to create extensions, because using the apt environment "overwhelms" the free ram. it's more recommended for full installs, which tc avoids in its philosophy. also dsl is compatible (and only partially) with debian woody. installing apt in tc might just give you packages that perform in a sub-par way. but if it could work, and do so well, i'd like it too.

i think that's how you know it's a more recent version, i think i've experienced that with mtpaint in other environments too. if you can't move the window, try alt+f4 to close. (make certain some part of mtpaint is focused!)
