Fedora is a God darn disaster.
« on: October 11, 2009, 02:58:03 AM »
I've just sent a letter to Red Hat, and Fedora.

I began Linux with a Red Hat QuickPro Guide from the library.
When Red Hat was discontinued I went to Debian.
The other day I decided to additionally install Fedora, just a minimal CLI.
My motivation was to familiarize myself with basics like network scripts etc., I understand the U.S. Army uses Red Hat, I am a veteran photojournalist, I have my protocols for working knowledge.

And now to my Fedora experience, what a massive mess, what a massive disaster.
Documentation is not clear about boot.iso netinst.iso revision.
netinst.iso is not straightforward to obtain.
Unlike Debian, netinst.iso Fedora requires net connection.
The installer could not access install.img on flash drive.
URL to install.img is too abstract for newbie.
boot: text denied me partitioning options.
boot: expert still I did not achieve installing a minimal CLI, installer failed 4064 MB partition not enough space, at that point I got fed up & threw the towel in, this was wasting too much of my time and I am not a Linux newbie.
And then my registration with Fedora Forum failed.

My whole experience was quite unacceptable.
Documentation should be cleaned up, net connection requirement is not good enough, the installer & partitioner is not good enough by any stretch of the imagination.
I think a newbie coming to Fedora would experience disaster.
What about a keen soldier seeking to expand skills?
Sort it out, pronto, it is a massive mess, it is quite unacceptable, it is a God darn disgrace, your position in the public eye, you should be dragged over the coals, quite ridiculous.

Without question Red Hat & Fedora have a duty to each other.
If you need to reply to this, don't waste my time with lame nonsense, and understand you should feel gratitude for this letter.

Please remove this post. It is not a war place.

I haven't had the best experience possible with Fedora but it is like most other Linux distributions. You pick the one that is the best fit for YOU. I use CentOS (a Redhat clone) in the server environment. It is about as bullet proof as you can get.

Human nature being human nature, humans who are brave enough to venture beyond Windows,
Fedora will be a primary consideration, at least initially, Red Hat Fedora has to have the utmost concern for it's credibility.

You must try to differentiate between the majority of personal-use Linux people and those who are using it in a professional environment.  The latter category tends to be in a situation where the system is already installed and configured by people who are intimately familiar with that particular distribution.  As fos said, you have to find what works best for you...many distros seem like garbage to some, and treasure to others.

This is a Tiny Core website, but the forum is "Off-Topic - Tiny Tux's Corner, Discussions regarding 'Leenooks' and other OS'es".  This thread is perfectly appropriate.

I agree that it's not off-topic given the forum description, but I'm unclear why andrewphoto_andyp would choose to post it here. Just because TC is a Linux distro doesn't mean it has any connection to Fedora.

I've never used Linux for business purposes, and only recently for personal ones. That said, my advice to anyone who needs software for business use is to get it with guaranteed support so there's some recourse if problems like this arise.
