Tried this on my box and ran into a quirk -- the sound keeps playing even if you close Opera. Couldn't see mplayer running either. Ended up rebooting to get it to turn off (there's probably a better way, cancelling a process or something).

To make mplayer run in the foreground:

Tools > Preferences > Advanced

Select Downloads

Select audio/mpeg

Click Edit

In the text box under Open with other application

Change /usr/local/bin/mplayer to /usr/local/bin/gmplayer

Click OK twice.


p.s. No need to reboot. Open a terminal.

tc@box:~ $ ps | grep mplayer

sudo kill [insert PID #]

Above requires one of the *gtk mplayers; the other two don't have a graphical frontend.
The only barriers that can stop you are the ones you create yourself.
