lxappearance and themes on regular Tiny Core
« on: September 05, 2020, 12:08:54 AM »
I've downloaded and installed a gtk2/gtk3 theme to use and am trying to set it with LXAppearance. I have all the gtk engine packages. when I switch to that theme, nothing changes the way it's supposed to, or at all really, and I'm getting errors such as
Code: [Select]
/home/tc/.themes/warna/gtk-2.0/main.rc:64: Invalid symbolic color 'base_color'
/home/tc/.themes/warna/gtk-2.0/panel.rc:6: Invalid color constant #151515
It's clear I'm missing something. What could it be? Thanks for any help

Hi welcome I assume by regular you mean x86 and not x86_64?

check if you have this file and if not create one. lxappearance is "supposed" to overwrite or create this file.
And I assume you clicked on apply?

Code: [Select]
cat .gtkrc-2.0
# DO NOT EDIT! This file will be overwritten by LXAppearance.
# Any customization should be done in ~/.gtkrc-2.0.mine instead.

gtk-theme-name="Raleigh"
gtk-icon-theme-name="nuoveXT2"
gtk-font-name="Sans 10"
gtk-cursor-theme-name="oxy-neon"
gtk-cursor-theme-size=0
gtk-toolbar-style=GTK_TOOLBAR_BOTH
gtk-toolbar-icon-size=GTK_ICON_SIZE_LARGE_TOOLBAR
gtk-button-images=1
gtk-menu-images=1
gtk-enable-event-sounds=1
gtk-enable-input-feedback-sounds=1
gtk-xft-antialias=1
gtk-xft-hinting=1
gtk-xft-hintstyle="hintfull"
gtk-xft-rgba="rgb"
include "/home/tc/.gtkrc-2.0.mine"

my previous setting was
gtk-icon-theme-name="Adwaita"

mod yours to suit....now I actually use adwaita but had to make a change to make sure lxappearance works as I am on 64 bit icewm and do things a bit different as I am the wacko.

I assume you know that a theme can not be used if not loaded by boot list or manually loaded, unless you are using a local theme?

AFAIK
local icon themes go under ~/.icons same for cursor themes
gtk2 themes go under ~./themes

"regular" as in Tiny Core with the basic GUI, not Core with command line only
I've got the .gtkrc-2.0 file with all the parameters that they should be. I am indeed using a local theme and persistent home, opt, and tce directories. i've got the theme in ~/.themes and i've got the .icons directory as well. so weird!

maybe it can not recognise your local themes?

I have no local gtk2/3 but I have a cursor theme like this
Code: [Select]
ls -al .icons/*
.icons/default:
total 12
drwx--S---    2 tc       staff         4096 Sep  5 07:34 ./
drwxr-sr-x    4 tc       staff         4096 Sep  5 07:28 ../
-rw-r--r--    1 tc       staff          126 Sep  5 07:34 index.theme

.icons/oxy-neon:
total 20
drwxr-xr-x    4 tc       staff         4096 Jan 29  2011 ./
drwxr-sr-x    4 tc       staff         4096 Sep  5 07:28 ../
drwxr-xr-x    2 tc       staff         4096 Jan 29  2011 cursors/
-rw-r--r--    1 tc       staff          143 Jan 29  2011 index.theme
drwxr-xr-x    2 tc       staff         4096 Jan 29  2011 source/

In other words please check you have an index and read permissions as a min for login username

link to your theme please, I or others can try it out

eg for icon theme mine is here

This is a direct link to a zip file containing the .gtkrc-2.0 file and .themes folder

No I wanted this link
https://www.gnome-look.org/p/1274257/

and I think you might find it better. Your load fails for me.
try downloading one or more of the downloads showing under files.
I needed to boot into openbox before I saw a diff, and then noticed my web browser had also changed when clicking on a bookmark. But openbox window decoration has not changed.

I suspect that change requires the murrine theme engine which allegedly is no longer available according to my quick search for it

I get multiple lines of last line
Code: [Select]
lxappearance

(lxappearance:7197): Gtk-WARNING **: 20:32:42.286: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "adwaita",

(lxappearance:7197): Gtk-WARNING **: 20:32:42.288: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "adwaita",

(lxappearance:7197): Gtk-WARNING **: 20:32:42.289: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "murrine",
but theme will still change.

Going back to my normal desktop

murrine is still available on 11.1, package is called "gtk-engine-murrine". It looks like thats the only thing wrong with yours. mine has a whole bunch of other errors like what i described earlier. it seems like i'm missing some sort of library package or something but i can't be sure of which one(s)

It sounds like the theme is buggy, not that you're missing any package.
The only barriers that can stop you are the ones you create yourself.

i mean i dunno how a hex color code like #151515 would be an "invalid color constant" but i don't think it's the theme lol
