wifi lenovo t410. and apps not opening
« on: July 08, 2017, 12:21:18 PM »
Hey yall! Before I start id like to compliment the devs on this brilliant distro and this whole community for being so friendly and helpful. Because of that I am determined to use tiny core for primary use at all costs.
All my computers bit the dust due to age (and probably lack of thought over the years), but I have one left. A lenovo t410.

Due to my situation wifi is a must. My wifi card is an Intel 6300. Whenever I run the wifi app all network SSIDs are listed, I choose the desired one and enter the password. It fails to connect every time (its the correct passkey, I've done it 30 times with the router in front of me). I've tried it manually and it doesn't work (probably doing it wrong though). I've read through the wiki, forum, and FAQs; the information given its fantastic, but unfortunately I believe it is going over my head.

I have TinyCore Plus installed to my ssd via the installer GUI. I have followed the wiki page dedicated to that function and it seems successful so far except for the wifi.

I also have hardwired it and installed a browser but it never opens when I click on it, ill look more into that another time. I believe ill take this situation step by step.

I apologize if I am troubling anyone for an operation that is likely trivial to most of y'all folks, but I love this system and the community so I gotta have it.

Welcome aime

Did you use APPS to install the browser ?

Which browser?

And show output of typing and entering the browser name at a terminal window

Typically when attempting to launch an application from a terminal you will receive any errors or names of missing libraries in feedback..

Yes from APPS then clicked on apps in top left -> cloud (remote) -> browse proceeded to search

Qtweb.tcz (still won't open upon clicking)

ran in terminal:
' QtWeb: error while loading shared libraries: libgobject-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such directory '

Went to APPS to search for said object file and no dice.

AttempTed Firefox and it works fine.

Any advice on the wifi? I'm confused about it because if the machine is listing all SSIDs then the wifi card should be detected. Would you know why it isn't upon passkey entry?

Thanks alot for your help.

UPDATE__QtWeb popped up just now for some reason about 7 min after clicking it and launching from terminal.

While in APPS, Instead of "search" use "Provides" from the dropdown menu and you'll find that libgobject-2.0.so.0 is provided by glib2.tcz

libgobject-2.0.so.0 can't help, but maybe it timedout waiting?

Run "dmesg" ?  from a terminal
Code: [Select]
dmesg | tail -20If no clues then try tail -50  and post output (please use code tags when posting large amounts of terminal output)

Hi aime,
It might be worth taking a look at  /etc/sysconfig/wifi-wpadrv .
It could contain either  wext  or  nl80211  as the WPA Driver to be used.
Swapping those out may get you connected.

Before attempting to connect, run either
Code: [Select]
echo wext | sudo tee /etc/sysconfig/wifi-wpadrv
(which is the default) or
Code: [Select]
echo nl80211 | sudo tee /etc/sysconfig/wifi-wpadrv

I had better luck with  nl80211  when using my old netbook to connect to a certain SSID.
Also see  http://tinycorelinux.net/8.x/x86/tcz/wifi.tcz.info .

If this was it, add  wifi-wpadrv  to your backup:
Code: [Select]
echo "etc/sysconfig/wifi-wpadrv" >> /opt/.filetool.lst
filetool.sh -b
Download a copy and keep it handy: Core book ;)

Misalf:
I ran the two entries with wext and nl80211 before attempting a connection in a terminal with your provided examples, unfortunately both failed. You are correct in regards to wext being located by default in my /etc/sysconfig/wifi-wpadrv. I did not add to backup yet due to it not working.

If using a Realtek adapter try the updated driver from "rtlwifi-4.8.17-tinycore.tcz"
And blacklist all other Wifi adapters

I apologize for giving the wrong card, I'm obviously inexperienced. The last trouble ill ask of you is how do I blacklist the other adapters or where can I find the file for that specific task?

I looked into blacklisting. A forum thread I found described a simple process to execute this task. It instructed to run lsmod. I did so, the output revealed:

1 driver in rtl_pci = rt18192se
2 drivers in rtlwifi = the above and rtl_pci
3 drivers in mac80211 (possibly not needed due to operating a thinkpad) = the two above and rtlwifi

The module listed as rt18192se is not being used.

I apologize for not tagging, I am not capable of c/p from terminal at the moment.

Instructions navigated me towards editing /etc/modprobe.conf and adding ' blacklist driver-name '
I did so, saved, then exited. I ran lsmod afterwards and it still listed these modules as being used. Shrugged my shoulders then proceeded towards the wifi icon in wbar and tried to connect. It failed to connect. I'm guessing I need to enable the rt18192se module listed in lsmod. Ill look for some other information on how to proceed but I welcome any advice or instruction.

Hello aime

First,  It's no trouble..

Second, I'm surprised you have more than one wifi adapter in a notebook!   The lenovo t410 came with a choice of three, but AIUI only one installed.   Anyhow, better confirm which adapters are installed and which adapter are you planning on using?

Install pci-utils.tcz and usbutils.tcz extensions, then to obtain hardware info run
Code: [Select]
lspci -k
lsusb

To Blacklist undesirable modules please add the blacklist=module_name bootcode to your boot config file.

In a Typical TC installation the boot config file (often called extlinux.conf) may be found in /tce/boot/extlinux/extlinux.conf

to edit try:
Code: [Select]
sudo editor /tce/boot/extlinux/extlinux.confOr
Code: [Select]
sudo editor /etc/sysconfig/tcedir/boot/extlinux/extlinux.conf

Add blacklist code to the append line, eg:
Code: [Select]
APPEND initrd=/boot/core.gz quiet blacklist=rtl8192seNote: be careful not to blacklist modules you might need.

BTW, copy and paste is easy;  simply highlight the text to copy and then align the cursor at the desire spot and depress the middle mouse button to paste.

Also we recommend reading the core book: http://tinycorelinux.net/book.html

I'm not familiar with your notebook except what I've researched to help out, but it appears the wifi adapter has been upgraded to an RealTek device.   Unless i missed the mystery Intel 6300 adapter in the list the only wifi adapter I see installed is a

Unfortunately the default rtl8192se module doesn't work, so..  In which case no need to blacklist any wifi device because AFAIK you only have one, simply install  " rtlwifi-4.8.17-tinycore.tcz " extension and reboot.

After installing " rtlwifi-4.8.17-tinycore.tcz " and rebooting I decided to attempt a connection using " wifi ". The attempt was successful according to the application so I decided to open this page and the repository with confidence and they failed to load. I will incude a screenshot.

I used your instruction and checked the " onboot.lst " file for " firmware-rtlwifi.tcz " and it was absent. Proceeded to tether up and fetch this extension. I installed it from " Apps" using the ' on boot ' option and restarted this process rendering the same results:

Connection established
cant connect with browser or repository
firmware-rtlwifi.tcz missing
reinstalling

So then after the second attempt and " firmware-rtlwifi.tcz " missing once more I reinstalled the package, exited " Apps ", reopened " Apps " and searched for the package to see if it actually installed. It didn't, so i repeated the process a couple more times producing the same results.

I am atleast getting a message from " wifi " confirming connectivity, which is a step forward from my previous position. I will delete and reorder all extensions in regards to your instruction.

EDIT- reordered and deleted extensions and same results. Even included " firmware-rtlwifi.tcz " despite the extension not installing during a session or after reboot and still received the same.

Hi aime
Do you have a nameserver listed in  /etc/resolve.conf? This is what mine looks like:
Code: [Select]
tc@box:~$ cat /etc/resolv.conf
nameserver 68.237.161.12
nameserver 71.243.0.12
tc@box:~$
Your ISP should have provided you with a maneserver IP address.

To see if you're connected to the outside world try the ping command:
Code: [Select]
tc@box:~$ sudo ping -c3 8.8.8.8
PING 8.8.8.8 (8.8.8.8): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=0 ttl=60 time=7.724 ms
64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=1 ttl=60 time=7.331 ms
64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=2 ttl=60 time=7.607 ms
--- 8.8.8.8 ping statistics ---
3 packets transmitted, 3 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 7.331/7.554/7.724/0.165 ms
tc@box:~$
If it comes back with  100% packet loss  then you might have a routing problem. If that's the case post the output of:
Code: [Select]
route -n
