Why Tiny Core?
« on: July 23, 2017, 06:09:02 PM »
Honestly I'm quite the novice to linux in general.

What brought me to TinyCore Linux was actually just reading a distribution list for the Raspberry Pi, and PiCore was listed. I got curious and voila, here I am.

My goal is to become more knowledgeable about Linux and just Operating Systems in general. I figured I'd go with a more "Intermediate to Advanced" distro with a lot of customization options and such to just dive right in.

Tiny Core originally appealed to me for several reasons:
It is lightweight
Highly customize-able (it is built on this after all)
Runs in RAM (I am curious to see how advantageous this really is)

However, I have seen a distinct lack of extensive documentation that a novice such as myself might want. What kind of advantages does this distribution have over, say, Alpine Linux? Or Arch Linux's extensive wiki?

PS. To clarify, I am *NOT* going to be running this on a raspberry pi but either a virtual machine or an older laptop, though the option to do so is appealing.

IMHO, Tiny Core is small and simple, making it easy to understand what "linux" is all about.
I was a novice to linux years ago and I was looking for a distro suitable for my Pentium 4.
The distribution list leads me here.
It took me a while (more like months) for me to get used to it.
Everyday, you learn something new.
It's satisfying to know you have full control to your PC.
Need something ??? Compile it ;) It actually works 8)

Due to the size, the boot time is relatively short in comparison to most linux.
Tiny Core don't load stuffs a user normally wouldn't need.
When you need to connect to a linux server, install openssh and that's all.

Benefit of RAM OS ? Everything disappears when you shot down the machine.
You have to specify which files to survive after each boot.
On scatter-mode linux (see the document) programs may clot up your disk.
On TC, they won't.
Besides, you don't need to boot your PC with office ready when you just want to check your e-mail.

Thank you for your responses!

I think I will be pursuing this distro a bit more. Is there any other reads regarding this distro or linux in general you guys may suggest other than those listed by Rich?

The Distrowatch and LWN interviews may be useful.
The only barriers that can stop you are the ones you create yourself.
