CF HDD not visible after boot
« on: March 25, 2017, 10:56:46 PM »
I installed TCL on a Soekris Net 4501 to use as a small VPN router.  For those not familiar, the Soekris has no Video out, this one has no USB either.  It's only storage / boot is net booting, or internal Compact Flash mounted as sda, or hda depending on the OS.  I custom coded core.gz to include Serial console output and loaded it onto the CF card.  I can boot to it using the CF, but the OS cannot see the CF ('fdisk -l' shows nothing)  is there something I need to load to show it, or What do I need to to to save persistent packages to the CF?  Below is my dmesg on boot.

Any and all help is appreciated.

Code: newbielink:javascript:void(0); [nonactive]

Hi !
I'm not an expert, but you can try usbutils usb-serial-KERNEL pci-utils
I use them for my laptop's built-in SD card reader (Not CF card, though)

I'll give the pci-utils a shot, but the socket is not USB based;  It is seen directly as an HDD.

Thanks.

IRQ's 14 and 15 are legacy IDE primary and secondary ports. Have you tried loading any PATA or IDE modules?

@andyj
That sounds like it might do the trick, I have searched the tcz's at ' newbielink:http://www.tinycorelinux.net/7.x/x86/tcz/ [nonactive]'  But I am not sure which ones contain the PATA / IDE modules.  Would you happen to have an example?

Thank you.

Hi Blupanthr2
Maybe there's something useful under  /lib/modules/kernel/drivers/

Re: CF HDD not visible after boot
« Reply #6 on: March 26, 2017, 07:38:27 PM »
The system boots from the CF card so electrically it works, and the IDE ports are somewhat detected:

Code: [Select]
PnPBIOS: Scanning system for PnP BIOS support...
PnPBIOS: PnP BIOS support was not detected.
...
scsi host0: pata_legacy
ata1: PATA max PIO4 cmd 0x1f0 ctl 0x3f6 irq 14
scsi host1: pata_legacy
ata2: PATA max PIO4 cmd 0x170 ctl 0x376 irq 15

It doesn't look like this board supports PnP., so maybe a kernel command line parameter would do the trick? I haven't used IDE in a while and I don't have a system to play with to try to reproduce the problem. The last time I did (booting from a CF card) it just worked, but that system wasn't 16 years old. It also might be that support for your particular chipset isn't compiled into the kernel.
