mps and mps-youtube

Hello

i don't know if it's much use to people here...but if you want a good youtube experience at the console via "mplayer-no-deps" there is a great free tool
called "poor mans youtube"

His project actually began as "poor mans spotify" just for a console version of spotify. That tool still exists and works nice with a back end of the "pleer" jukebox of millions of songs. (his tool does not use the actual spotify song database"

He also made a sister to the music tool called "poor mans youtube".

Since a while back, and for legal reasons he had to change the names of both his tools to just "mps" and "mps-youtube".  The spotify had to be dropped somehow.

So yes....both tools are at his sourceforge page and simple to install using GIT etc.
They both need Python 2.7 or above and the youtube tool also needs the "paffy" extension installed.

Anyhow, you will find they work real nice  from the console. The youtube tool can have the arguments of mplayer set. I recommend you use "-zoom" and maybe "-aspect 16:9" and "-fs" for full screen. Any combination of those should get you what you need with full screen youtube viewing.

The tools are very easy to use.

I had an issue with playing mp4 youtube vids but discovered that whenever you choose any youtube video to watch....."mps-youtube" will first default to playing the "mp4" version but if you hit "q" it will move onto the next version which is "webm" and usually works perfect in mplayer

This youtube tool is very good. now.

There are tips and tricks....for example...say you search for "Blue Oyster CUlt" videos and get the results.....say you just want to watch video number 6 in the list and you only want to hear the audio......

6 -a

this will just playback the audio etc

there are lots of tricks. It's a nice youtube console player working good.

no need for Adobe flash

this thread may need to be moved....sorry

to add to this thread

when using "mps-youtube" you can also get the videos to work nice by forcing it to play "webm" videos first.

To do that there are several methods and one method is to type "set" and look at the settings of "mps-youtube"

Then type "set max_res 640".    THis will force it to play "webm" videos first.  Mplayer-nodeps handles "webm" videos just nice.

Thanks
