X uses tty7.
If you enter <CTL>ALT>1 you can switch to tty1.  You will see a shell prompt.  Tty1 is not locked.

dCore, like Core, uses tty2 for X, only if u use multivt boot code tty7 it is used by X.
But tty1 in dCore is locked by X, while in core I can use tty1 since there is the $ prompt

I will look at it and compare to what a standard Debian install does.  Tinycore being basically intended a single user system at least as far as the desktop is concerned, I am not sure this is a high priority issue.  But I will check it out.
