It works !!! Finally the lcd backlight can be turned off at the console prompt. Thank you Juanito.

"sudo vbetool dpms off"

That's all it takes.

To turn back on just close the lid and open it again or use:

"sudo vbetool dpms on"

I modified my post since everything works great. I can even access the system and turn on and off the display at the remote end using ssh dropbear.
