Well, when I started doing programming on mainframes in the early 80s and saw the 2-digit year field, I recall thinking "Won't this cause problems in 2000? Oh well, nobody will be using this stuff then anyway." Of course, then there was the whole Y2K thing. Hopefully Unix/Linux will be more ahead of the game coming up on 2038 than we were back in the 90s.

By 2038 there will probably be no 32bit processers left running.
