TinyCore Install Help
« on: January 22, 2014, 06:21:10 PM »
Hello, I am currently trying to install Tiny Core to a very old laptop. I downloaded TinyCore-current.iso and burned it to a bootable CD. When I put it into the computer I boot from CD and click to open the Tiny Core GUI, but after I do that it loads everything and just seems to stop at a command line and never opens up the GUI. And every command I try (such as tc-install, xstart, etc...) does not work. Any suggestions on how to make this work? I want to make a full install onto the lap top. Thank you.

Try
Code: [Select]
xsetup
How much RAM is installed?

Code: [Select]
-sh: xsetup: not foundwas the output.

And if this helps it is a Sony Vaio PCG-R505EL with 384MB of RAM. Pretty old PC.

I'm confused.
What do you "click" to open a GUI?

384MB is more than sufficient.
I'd expect 'xsetup' to be available, unless you would have confused .iso's and booted core instead of tinycore.

No I did not confuse core with TinyCore, I double checked and I even have a CD with CorePlus on it with the same problem.

And sorry to say click gerald_clark. When I boot from the CD I get the Tiny Core options saying:
Code: [Select]
Boot TinyCore
Boot TinyCore (on slow devices, waitusb=5)
Boot Core (command line only).
Boot Core (command line only on slow devices, waitusb=5)

I select Boot TinyCore and thats when it shows everything loading then just goes to a command line.

Try the second entry.  Your CD drive may be slow to respond to a probe.

Unfortunately that did the exact same thing. Still opened to a command line.

It sounds like your CD drive is not supported.
This laptop is probably too old to boot off USB, and is probably only USB-1 anyway.

The same thing actually happened with Puppy Linux, why I tried switching to Tiny Core. Would my only option be to try and get virtual box going on the lap tops windows xp and partitioning through there? The laptop is awfully slow.

UPDATE: I do not know if this means anything but whenever I try booting up Tiny Core it always skips the "loading extensions..." part and goes straight to the command line? I don't know if that helps.

As I said, it sounds like the CD drive is unsupported.
If you really want to install to this machine, try booting a CorePlus iso dd-d to a thumb drive.

I did a little searching and from what I've found, the CD drive is an external device connected by Firewire. Not to
mention that these Sony Vaio laptops seem to be real basket cases when it comes to installing Linux.
