Mplayer(s) in 5.x
« on: November 17, 2013, 02:24:09 PM »
It would be nice to have at a minimum Mplayer-nodeps in TC 5.x, and ideally Mplayer-gtk2 and SMPlayer. Thanks to the TC developers for the good work on TC 5.x so far!

Hi all
tinycore rocks as ever! I am very fond of it.
It would be even greater if we could get mplayer on the version 5.x.
Are there any plans for this to happen.
Thanks to all the developers. Keep it up!!
Ciao

Hi!

Anyone tested if the version of mplayer-nodeps from 4.x is working in the 5.x?

If it does, you just need to to ask in the proper thread to add it to the 5.x repo.

It needs libpng12 which is not supported in C5.

Why not but any demand? VLC is working greeat.

VLC has crappy hardware acceleration, see:

[...] VLC, in its modular approach and its transcoding/streaming capabilities, does decoding in GPU at the decoding stage only and then gets the data back to go to the other stages (streaming, filtering or plug any video output after that).

What that means is that, compared to some other implementation, GPU decoding in VLC can be slower because it needs to get the data back from the GPU. [...]

 ;)

What about the  next gen mplayer instead.. vmp (or so?) mpv instead.

mpv (http://mpv.io/) has much better hardware acceleration (when the "hwdec" and "vo" options are set up properly).

It would be really nice if mpv would be added to the Tiny Core Linux repository.

Any chance someone could do that?

Regards

Ha!  no idea what I said there...

VLC is a beast indeed. Currently MPlayer is what became my favorite. I have rebuilt MPlayer for myself with some added features as the version in the repo is kind of too limited for me. I should probably rebuild it against the recently updated deps and submit an extension (I was hesitating because reliable video playback is kind of crucial to me). SMplayer is also, while not perfext, a nice frontend for MPlayer (I'd submit that too). Haven't been able to get MPV working the last time I tried though. I'm not saying I take the the offer but I might give it another shot when I have time. Also SMPlayer supports it.

A reliable media player could be an important aspect for a Linux "distro" ("What can I do with Core?") .
No problem for me, obviously, but I know how it feels when something is "missing".

Tomorrow I'm going to help a friend to rescue some data from a boot-broken drive (windows). Using TinyCore via USB drive. I'm confident that it will be easy for me to also install TinyCore alongside the new Windows installation, without complains by the owner of the PC. After witnessing the power and possibilities of free software booting off of a USB stick, which can be used for a lot of everyday-tasks (video, audio, web, (+ more advanced stuff)), who can resist(?).

Without having much knowledge about media players, I will look into it. May take no time, or a lot. (;

One thing I want to ask, would Bluray support in MPlayer be desirable?

Thanks a lot  :).

But may I ask why the 32-bit repo is being left out once again?

..because I mainly use corepure64.

Once mpv is posted you can use the build instructions to compile a 32-bit version.
