at the recent time when i shutdown or restart tinycore
backup takes several times longer than it was in previous versions
tc output options window is delayed two to three times longer
system uses 100% cpu power and cooler begins roar as fighter
Quote
pentium4 1.8ghz
ram 512mb
i did not change settings and don't use an encrypted backup
Quote
quiet waitusb=5 showapps vga=792 nozswap lang=uk_UA.UTF-8 kmap=qwerty/ua-utf desktop=jwm-snapshot lst=onbootlite.lst
backuped data size also has not changed
Quote
tc@box:~$ du -d0 /home /opt
93.1M   /home
188.0K   /opt
may this be due with recent changes of backuping?
Change log:
* Updated filetool.sh & tc-restore.sh improved usage of "protect" with existing backup file.

There have been to changes that would account for that.
Look for a large mydata.tgz and check for changes from the stock .filetool.lst and .xfiletool.lst.

FWIW, I haven't seen any obvious increase in boot/shutdown times or the backup file size in TCL 4.5.2. My opt and home directories look the same as before.

I do notice that AbNoRMiS's .filetool.lst has the entire opt directory. Mine is different:

opt/bootlocal.sh
opt/shutdown.sh
opt/tcemirror
opt/backgrounds/
opt/.filetool.lst
opt/.xfiletool.lst
usr/lib/oss/etc
home

My opt directory doesn't have much else in it anyway but maybe AbNoRMiS's one does?

total size of backuped data and final archived backup has not changed
perhaps the time increase is not noticeably on more powerful computer
how powerful your computer compared to mine?

starting since tc 4.2 the original .filetool.lst contains two position

entire opt folder almost does not affect total amount of backup data

So if you switch back to an earlier version (4.5.1), it gets faster again? If you compare the resulting mydata.tgz from both, any difference?

checked out for three versions
4.3.1
Quote
tc@box:~$ filetool.sh -d
.........
Total backup size (uncompressed):   69,24 MB (72607322 bytes)
Total backup size (compressed)  :   26,28 MB (27551664 bytes)
4.5.1
Quote
tc@box:~$ filetool.sh -d
.........
Total backup size (uncompressed):   69.20 MB (72562559 bytes)
Total backup size (compressed)  :   26.23 MB (27505828 bytes)
4.5.2
Quote
tc@box:~$ filetool.sh -d
.........
Total backup size (uncompressed):   69,59 MB (72968949 bytes)
Total backup size (compressed)  :   26,40 MB (27677442 bytes)
same sizes, same times, cooler roar as fighter
i can't understand what happened and due to what increased data backup time
and this despite the fact that before this i did uninstalled firefox with its giant folder in home directory
i.e. before this point uncompressed data size was about 140 mb but backup time was less
only one thing is for sure that it is independent from system and this topic can be moved from this section

Hi AbNoRMiS
You might want to take a look inside your mydata.tgz file and see what's really in there. It looks like this may
be due to the large size of the backup/restore. Maybe you have a link or mounted something in home or opt
that is being included in the backup. I'll move this to TCB Q & A.

i looked in mydata.tgz and there all strictly by list and nothing more
however in bigHomeFiles i found several opera browsing history files more than 6mb each
previously i delete them with the opera cache but recently i took off this checkbox
may large files archiving causes this slowdown unlike archiving of many small files?
i already cleared these three or four files but have not rebooted since that time

That sounds like it could be it. I have my browser (Namoroka) set to delete cache etc. when I exit. And I added the browser files that consistently showed up in bigHome to the .xfiletool.lst.

Interesting that my .filetool.lst is not the most up-to-date. I added a line to it to preserve my OSS settings, and maybe the file's not being overwritten when I upgrade. It probably wouldn't hurt to just backup the whole opt directory since there's nothing much extra in it anyway.

You can always time the backup without rebooting:

time filetool.sh -b

Hi AbNoRMiS
You could try the syslog boot code to see if you can spot anything that looks like it's taking to long in /var/log/messages.
