Skype
« on: March 18, 2012, 05:33:49 PM »
Hi!

I'm truly impressed how far TC has reached. There is one extension that I would like to see in the repository though, skype. I'm using skype a lot to keep in touch with friends widely spread and it's really marvellous to be able to do that talking to each other and see each other face to face. I think this extension will be appreciated a lot in the TC community. I've tried the script that builds skype but unfortunately it didn't work. So I'm hoping for a better result from an extension.

Have fun making TC more versatile,

If still exists statically compiled version, you can download, decompress / install and use mksquashfs to create you own extension

Heyho meo,
please try to be precide and provide more details if something is not working correctly, because no one can take a look into your head ;-) With "I've tried the script" and "it's not working" I can only guess, search through all extensions first, then maybe even through the Programming section and so on. Try to be precise please like

1. I loaded xyz.tcz
2. I opened a terminal and run $ install-skype
3. The output was
Code: [Select]
output

So someone can verify the error or change something. Thanks!

Hi meo,
Just download the static version from skype website,
http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-linux-beta-static

and like vinnie say, to create the extension use mksquashfs.
squashfs-tools-4.x.tcz

Sorry Guys!

I know that I should have been more specific. There is nothing wrong with the script. It does it's job but that doesn't make skype function on my Asus eee 1001PX. It's kind of weird. No sound or video stream. The only thing left is chatting. The drivers needed just isn't there. I've tried the static version too and it's the same story. The webcam works though with xvid I think it was. The sound works with oss so the problem is that the drivers for the microphone and the webcam isn't built into skype (either one of them). Cutting to the chase means that I can't get skype to work on this computer with Tiny Core. I would very much wish that skype worked with TC on this box since it's so easy running TC from an SD card on it. TC is my favourite distro and since I'm a distro junkie that means a lot. I've probably tried out hundreds (if not more I just threw away about 300 old cds) of different distros during more than 10 years. I think I've explained the real issue now. Sorry that I wasn't so specific from the beginning!

Have fun with this awesome distribution of Linux,
meo

I might use Skype only about twice a year (mostly to keep the account active so that the few Euros I still have in it don't "disappear"). According to my notes I could not get it to work with OSS (and I'm sure I've tried it with the old "2.0.0.72-oss" release).

Even though I generally prefer to use OSS, in this case I just have to temporarily use 'alsa.tcz' (plus 'fontconfig.tcz',  'glib2.tcz' and 'Xorg-7.5-lib.tcz', and ensure NOT to have OSS loaded). To ensure that the microphone and loudspeaker are working I first run my own local "3 seconds echo-test" (e.g. via arecord -d 3 -V mono t && aplay -V mono t) and tweak the volumes until this test works for me. Afterwards I can simply extract the downloaded Skype archive (currently its: 'skype_static-2.2.0.35.tar.bz2') and the audio "just works".

So far I could not be bothered to get the webcam going as this might require too much effort and too many additional extensions for IMHO very little gain.

Nice one! So, there's later updates, though using alsa will not work well?
Much as I like OSS, having struggled to understand alsa enough I wonder
if/why alsa not being used for tcz.

I will read this the post here again better as i bleieve i may have missed why.

thank you!

with a choice between oss version or current skype version

as i remember in oss version may choose between oss or alsa
but the latest skype updates works only through pulsaudio

on my desktop system i have ONLY alsa-lib and alsa-utils. and i really dislike pulseaudio and all that.

um, I'd say nope, skype works fine with basic alsa. works here on desktop system. minimal arch setup.

Just off the top of my head, i think perhaps OSS is going to cause as many issues initially (or even long-term) as perhaps alsa might. thing is, alsa allows latest skype and that's what I'm looking to use.  can't rcall all the hell way back, though I'm alsa all the way with skype.

never any time to remember though I recall learning alsa somewhat took a while, then i went to OSS which was cool, then......BACK to alsa.  OSS is great on BSD.

all the above said: I'm not a guru on this subject though my gut says go alsa and the latest linux skype  bigtime.

whatever happens it's cool you're keeping the subject in our minds.  great!!

i say probably because all the same the skype works with alsa
but for some strange reason alsa crooked works on my computer :)
i sent getskype.tcz to tsesubmit and probably it will come soon
