Upgrade from 4.1 to 4.2.1 HowTo?
« on: January 16, 2012, 09:24:10 AM »
Sorry for asking this dumb noob questin but Iam trying for hours to update my 4.1 System to 4.2.1 (ezreamster is not working any more etc...)

I got me the files core.gz and vmlinuz from the  4.2.1 iso  and put them to the /tce/boot folder , deleted the files .profile,.xsession and .setbackground in /home/tc. After that i reboot.

This seems not to be the way it works.  :-[

How is it correct?

Ps: If someone tells me to search the forum, please do not forget to tell me the right keywords to search  ;)

Thanks in advance

Da Alc

After updating core.gz and vmlinuz, and a reboot, it would have been enough to copy the updated files from /etc/skel to /home/tc, over the existing ones.
The only barriers that can stop you are the ones you create yourself.

The initrd changed from microcore.gz/tinycore.gz to core.gz.
You need to adjust your boot loader config file accordingly.

My first mistake was a corrupt core.gz file. I copied it again and edited the extlinux.conf  to use the core.gz file.

This time system boots up, but than it hangs and gives me :tc@box and a blinking cursor , typing : tinycore xsetup but nothing happens..... :(

Why would you type that?
Read the release notice on the fora.
Core is the replacement for microcore.
If you want a gui, you need to also install Xlibs, Xprogs, an X server ( Xvesa or Xorg), a window manager such as flwm_topside, and optionally wbar.

tce-load -iw Xlibs
tce-load -iw Xprogs
tce-load -iw Xvesa
tce-load -iw flwm_topside
tce-load -iw wbar
xsetup
startx

I have read the notice, but i did not understand exactly what to do.  In fact a combination of bad english (had my last lesson 28 years ago, so it is a bit rusted) and linux noob.

There is a wiki for updating the 3.x version but none for updating the 4.x versions

Lost all my my tce's, wasn't my day today....

I didn't have much luck on my initial attempt to upgrade from 4.1 to 4.2 either. I ended up downloading the CorePlus ISO (which includes the tc-install extension and all the window manager ones) and burning it to CD, then booting from there and following the directions. I selected install to an existing partition (ext2) on USB though. Sorry, I've never tried a hard disk install (my box doesn't even have one!) if that's what you're doing.

in fact I have the same opinion, for example, I missed the discussion of /etc/skel and now I have to recheck the files in my home :P

I think the procedure should be written schematically on the wiki
