lxappearance is part of LXDE, though it doesn't depend on any other LXDE components. It's very much like gtk2_prefs, but better - it lets you select an icon theme, and allows some adjustment of how icons are presented. IMHO it should replace gtk2_prefs at some point, due to its better functionality.

gtk2_prefs is an extension, so people that want to use something else don't have to ever download or use it. lxappearance is likely to be an extension also, if ever included in tc.
