Software Raid

(1/1)

remus:
Hi all,

I'm having a crack at linux software raid, as I tought it would be good to use for a samba based file server.

Some tutorials I'm reading say something about a limintation  being that you can only use raid1 for /boot partitions.

This has me a bit confused, as I only want to use raid for the dir that contains my samba shares, some clarification would be great.

gerald_clark:
Raid is started from initrd.
Therefore, you cannot boot from RAID.
You can however boot from one of the components of a RAID1.

Rich:
Hi remus
If the machine you will be using can boot from a USB stick, you could install Tinycore, Samba, and
whatever other extensions you require on it. That would leave the hard drives free for just your data
and you can stripe them however you please.

If you want a little additional redundancy, once you have the system set up, duplicate the USB stick
as a backup and put it somewhere safe.
