hello,
I loaded different extensions for cpu and fan control. But I am a bit lost.
modprobe powernow-k6 dont work..
cpufreq-info (in terminal) dont work..
(after I loaded on boot: cpufreq-2.6.33)
Can somebody inform how to work with the tools and TCL3.5rc2?.
My fan is noisy and should be controlled because the processor dont seems to be cold in wintertime.
-
It's possible your fan is noisy for at least a couple of reasons:
1. faulty bios
2. buggy acpi
3. your cpu is running at maximum speed all of the time
4. failed cpu temperature sensor
5. etc, etc
By checking lsmod before and after loading the cpufreq-2.6.33 extension, do any modules get loaded automatically?
I'm not using tc right now, but I can start cpufreq without loading any more extensions with: # modprobe acpi-cpufreq
# modprobe cpufreq_ondemand
# echo ondemand > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor
# echo ondemand > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu1/cpufreq/scaling_governor
This slows the cpu(s) when idle and stops the fan running
-
It's very possible your CPU doesn't have any cpu freq control or fan control. I remember on the Intel side they only appeared on P3 Mobile, and on the desktop somewhat later.

Yes I think freq scaling is not supported. Isn't fan control up to the motherboard and the chipset, not to the CPU?
-
Have you looked at all BIOS settings in detail already?
-
Thanks for the comments. Here are the result of my researchs.
I verified what happens with this board: K6XV3+/66 rev. BB+ from DFI.COM. Under Win98, people seems to change the parameters with CPUCool. So, I think, clock frequency (or FSB) and fan can be modified with other OS.
I have acpi and cpufreq as extension on boot.
No modules are loaded automatically (lsmod dont show acpi etc.). So far I see, I had a boot option in menu.lst noapci; I will change it to see what happens.
When I make sudo modprobe acpi-cpufreq, the message "modprobe: cant load module acpi-cpufreq (kernel.tclocal/arch/x86/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/acpi-cpufreq.ko.gz): no such device.
I post now the dmesg; perhaps somebody see something here?

'nosci noapci' looks somehow wrong, check your syntax.
And 'noapic' vs. 'acpi=off" would be different options.

I deleted these codes from the boot options.

ACPI should be recognized..
-
acpi per se is definitely recognized judging from the output of dmesg in your prior post.
However, that fact alone does not annul what all other posters have stated so far.
Curious, what app did you get this output from?
-
The cpucool app homepage states that it changes the FSB - this would not be normal power saving, it would be a dynamic overclocking option. At the time Linux does not support overclocking from inside the OS.
[Yes, I know you would use the option to underclock.]
-

the lshw TCE

Underclock? yes.. ;-)
It would be great if an extension exist for dynamic modification of the FSB.
Ideal:
- boost my OldBoy with 650MHz during Internet activities
- stay at 300MHz for other activities
- an with fan/temperature control in case I use too much the boost option.. ;-)
Perhaps:
- CPUCool as TCE? (I already asked to the CPUCool owner.. no positive answer)
- lfsb (seems to be an opensource for changing fsb) as TCE?
- or start CPUFSB or CPUCool with wine? (I will try it)
-
Quick Google search result:
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Fan_control_scripts
http://linux.die.net/man/8/fancontrol
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fan_Speed_Control
Hope it helps.
-
Also undervolting is said to have a capacity to lower temperature, and therefore fan activity:
